Less than a week left!!!

After over a year of planning, we will be celebrating our 20 year reunion at the end of this week.  Hard to believe that we have been out of school that long.  We are looking forward to enjoying the company of old friends, great food, and a couple of drinks!Agenda:

  • 6-7 pm – Arrival and social hour
  • 7-8 – Dinner and the DJ starting towards the end of the hour
  • 8-Midnight – Let the fun begin!!!!

Dress attire: Casual (some of the committee members are planning to wear jeans and others are thinking cute casual sun dress.) Please wear what makes you comfortable.

We are in full swing with the planning and we have two things paid for, BEER and the venue!!!! We are extending the special offer of a reduced rate of $25 per person until June 1st. Contact list for the Class of ’92 is coming together

By now, many of you have likely received a message from one of the committee members asking you to submit your contact information. We are attempting to get an e-mail address, phone number (home or cell) and physical address from each classmate.

One of the things we are wondering is how far classmates live from the Metro East area. From the data that we have so far, we have a form of contact information for approximately 200 of the nearly 400 classmates from the Class of ’92. About 150 of those classmates live in the St. Louis region and with the another 45 classmates living out of the area or state.

Roughly 60% of the class uses the social media site Facebook and some even use Twitter. By the way, if you are on Twitter you can follow us there @kahoks92.

We will publish a list of who we are looking for soon so please check back and look at our Lost and Found page. Please, if you know how to contact anyone on the list we would appreciate an e-mail with information so we can follow up with that person.

Class of ’92 October Meeting Recap includes announcement

The Collinsville High School Class of ’92 reunion committee met again last night at Jennifer Osaben’s house to discuss the progress of the group since the September meeting.

Our main goal for the reunion is to make this fun and include as many people as possible. We want classmates to feel comfortable in reuniting with former classmates by renewing old friendships and making new ones.

The reunion committee is excited to announce that we have secured a location and date for the reunion. The reunion will take place at the Edwardsville Gun Club on Saturday, September 1, 2012. The committee is planning other activities for that weekend including a casual mixer on Friday night and other activities earlier in the day on Saturday. Stay tuned for more details.

Currently, we have researched and contacted several local DJs and a few photographers for the event, but have yet to make any confirmations. One area we are still working on is food. We hope to include a full meal in the evening, but this depends what prices we receive from local caterers. The plan at this point is to offer draft beer free and possibly other drinks, but mixed drinks will be a cash bar.

The goal of the committee is to keep costs of the reunion as low as possible while acting responsible about what we are spending as a group. Therefore, providing your e-mail address to help us get information to you in crucial. This allows us to keep correspondence free and quick. If you haven’t given your contact information to a member of the committee or submitted it yourself, please send it to us at our e-mail address.

The reunion committee will meet again in November to start finalizing some decisions on our to do list. In the next couple of months we will release more details including costs.

Maryville church plans Electronic Recycling Day

Not long ago the tools we used to get our work done were completely manual. Men and women used hammers, shovels, wrenches, typewriters and telephones to complete daily tasks.

Now we live in an age where our tools are electronics: computers, smart phones, printers, televisions are all prevalent in the workplace. Even construction workers use portable drills and saws that require batteries. When those items wear out they need a place to be recycled instead of ending up in a landfill polluting the groundwater with dangerous chemicals.

To help offset the electronics placed in the trash or cluttering up storage rooms, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 6325 West Main Street in Maryville, will host an Electronics Recycling Day on Saturday, November 5th from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

The church sent out a flyer with a list of accepted items for the Electronic Recycling event. Devices like computers, phones, televisions, printers and DVD or VHS players are wanted. Other items such as large and small appliances, electric motors, scrap aluminum and copper and household electrical system parts will also be accepted.

While there are stipulations about what items are accepted, there is no regulations about who can bring items to the event. Anyone from the surrounding area can help by giving their unwanted electronics to the church. Organizers have contracted with a local electronic recycling business to dispose of the items. The event serves as a fundraiser to help church programs and groups.

For your information, there have been new rules/laws passed regarding landfills. Beginning with the new year, some electronics will no longer be allowed to be disposed of with normal trash pickups. You will have to pay to have certain items disposed of properly. If you have any items, now is a great time to get rid of them free of charge.

A Book Suggestion – Ready Player One

This week, an old girlfriend, who also graduated from Collinsville High School, pointed me a new book and I thought I’d share it with you.

Recently published by Crown Publishing on August 16, Ready Player One by author Ernest Cline, is a book sure to resonate with everyone who lived through the 1980s.

What’s not to like in a plot that employs the references of the past with some science fiction of the near future, yet resonates to our present day condition. Set in 2044, the book is a dystopian look at the not-so-distant future where citizens flee a grim reality by logging in to the OASIS, an virtual-reality game that’s become something more akin to Second Life.

This is the first novel for the Ohio born writer. Cline, a self-proclaimed geek in his late-30s who proudly owns his own Delorean DMC-12, also wrote the screenplay for the movie Fanboys. The movie about Star Wars fanatics set in 1998 centers around the plot of a group of high school friends who hatch a plan to try to infiltrate George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch and steal a rough cut of the first film in the newest Star Wars trilogy.

Here’s a playlist that Cline created using songs referenced in the book. I just purchased the book so I have yet to read it so we’ll see if the book resonates with me as much as Douglas Coupland’s Generation X or Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity did. If the reviews and the synopsis are any indication I’m sure that many people from our generation, including myself, will love it.

Believe me – this book will be more fun than anything you had to read during high school. However, this book seems to have movie written all over it. In fact the film rights were already bought by Warner Bros. last year, but why wait? The book is always better.

A Fun, Family Event Celebrates Fall

If you still reside in the Collinsville area and are looking for a fun, family oriented event to take the kids to, then the Maryville Fall Fest fits the bill perfectly.

Sponsored by the Maryville Community Improvement Board, the 3rd annual Fall Fest is scheduled for Saturday, October 15. Held in the shady surroundings of Fireman’s Park this free event hosted by volunteers offers a few hours of family fun on a crisp fall day.

Local churches and non-profit groups donate their time and creativity to sponsor local booths providing fun activities for the kids. The activities for the day include pumpkin decorating, face painting, craft making and other games. Kids can also have fun playing on the three inflatable bounce houses.

Plus, you may want to pack the extended family in the car to hear the kids sing along with their favorite songs in a Kids Karaoke area from 11:00am –1:00pm.

Parents can feel safer after getting a free Kid Safety ID Kit with police officers from local departments manning the booth. The officers will take the child’s picture, fingerprints and a brief description (height, weight, eye color) and give the parents a complimentary CD to take home.

As in the past, the event coincides with the yearly National Fire Prevention Week. The Village of Maryville Volunteer Fire Department will have their fire trucks, ambulances and fire safety equipment on display for all to see.

My grandmother worked as a telephone operator for much of her life. First for Southwestern Bell in St. Louis, and after World War II she worked the exchange for Granite City Steel where she retired.
 

Later in life she kept several notebooks full of information including addresses, phone numbers, birthdays, anniversaries and favorite things about family members, friends and acquaintances. She and my grandfather also helped organize class reunions for their high school graduating classes. My desire to keep in contact with people must therefore be genetic or just part of my upbringing.

One of the most difficult tasks about planning a class reunion is tracking down former classmates that you’ve lost touch with over the years. In today’s world there are several ways to keep in contact with other people — telephone, text message, e-mail, social media and even via the regular U.S. Mail. However, with so many people using the internet, our goal is to keep costs down by attempting to contact classmates primarily through e-mail and this website.

After we find contact information for a majority of the graduating class we will post a list of those classmates we are still looking for and asking for your help. Either contact information or clues will help us greatly. We hope to have a detailed list of who we are still looking for by early November so those people can be tracked down via other means.

Class of ’92 Reunion Committee Meets

The Collinsville High School Class of 1992 Class Reunion Committee met Wednesday, September 28 at Christie Morales house to discuss the next steps in planning the 20 year class reunion.

At this point the plan is to hold the reunion around the weekend of September 1, 2012. This date coincides with Labor Day holiday weekend. The thought is to give those classmates travelling another day to get some things done after being out-of-town all weekend.

Initial thoughts are to hold a mixer on Friday night to get re-acquainted. The actual 20 year class reunion will be held on Saturday night. At this point we are still finalizing the place, but the main goal is to keep costs reasonable to allow as many people as possible to attend. Meetings will continue monthly until the event next year to ensure having a well-organized, fun experience.

Currently, we are in the process of tracking down contact information for all classmates from the Class of 1992. We are attempting to find as many people through Facebook as possible. Having everyone’s e-mail address will allow us to save on any mailing costs. However, it will be good to know where everyone is regarding how many classmates will travel from out-of-town. If you are a classmate without a Facebook account please send us your contact information (address, phone number, e-mail) to kahoks92@gmail.com.

At this point we are taking suggestions on reasonably priced caterers and photographers. Please contact us if you know of someone who you’ve worked with or that you know that can help. Decorations and entertainment are also areas that will need attention soon.

We are excited to announce that planning has begun for the 20 year class reunion for the Collinsville High School Class of 1992.

We have a started to make plans for a reunion weekend already, but the plan is to send out a short survey to get your feedback as well. Currently, we are in the process of tracking down as many classmates as possible and we would appreciate any help we can get from former classmates, parents, family or even teachers.
